Not sure what to do in Lanzarote? Visiting the Jameos del Agua is a great option full of art and nature.
A fusion between art and nature.
It was the architect César Manrique who merged nature and art to create the Jameos del Agua, natural space and a centre for art and culture. He changed this wild space harmoniously and respectfully, and that is why the Jameos del Agua is the only place in the world where you can see the Jameito, the blind crab that is the protagonist of this very special memory of Lanzarote.Did you know that the word "jameo" is of aboriginal origin and refers to the hole produced after the collapse of the roof of a volcanic tube?
Jameos del Agua is a quiet and magical place. They are inside a volcanic tunnel produced by the eruption of the Corona volcano and have at least three openings or jameos that you can enjoy while strolling around, having a delicious dinner or listening to a live concert.
The volcanic tunnel where the Jameos del Agua are located is one of the longest in the world, at almost 6 km, with at least 1.5 km under the sea.
The access through the first Jameo, the "Jameo Chico" is full of striking nooks and crannies, such as the natural, crystalline lake through which the sea filters or the vault through which the light enters in an impressive beam.
The opening that leads to the "Jameo Grande" contains a lush garden and is where you can see how César Manrique worked his magic to combine art with nature.
At the end of the tour is the auditorium, where you can enjoy live music while having an intimate dinner in the dim light of the volcanic tunnel.
And it is precisely the absence of light and the conditions of the tunnels that allow the blind albino crab we call Jameito to live. It is endemic to Lanzarote, specifically endemic to the Jameos del Agua, and is one of the main reasons the Jameos are protected and classified as a site of scientific interest.
Did you know that ‘endemic’ means that it only exists in one specific place in the world and nowhere else?
These little guys are barely 3cm long, they are very sensitive to changes in the lagoon (coming from seawater), so noise and light affect them. If you are thinking of visiting them, respect their environment, don't take flash photography, and don't throw coins into the water as rust can kill them.
El Jameito is one of the major tourist attractions on the island of Lanzarote, which is why we wanted it to be the star of this heartfelt magnet of los Jameos del Agua.
Now you know one of the best things you can do on your visit to Lanzarote. Do not miss other tourism recommendations in Lanzarote in our blog.
A crystalline blue background like its waters, and an albino crab, the Jameito, are the components of this magnet, which will make you remember the wonderful experience of your visit to the Jameos del Agua.
