Famara's culture, history, and art route.
This souvenir wants to show you the rich culture and history that Caleta de Famara has. He wants you to get to know Famara not only as a tourist paradise but also as part of the history of Lanzarote.
Caleta's little hotel called the priest's house and the water mill are two essential elements we wanted to represent in this magnet.
It was D. Luis Ramírez who built the only modernist building on the island of Lanzarote. Born in El Islote, San Bartolomé, in 1884, and after learning about Gaudí's art after one of his trips to Barcelona, the unique patron Luis Ramírez was the first owner of the “Hotelito” in Caleta de Famara. The house built in the 1920s is also called the Casa del Cura, and that is because, after his death, he wanted to donate it to the parish of Villa de Teguise.
Its modernist aspect is, in turn, marked by the culture of a fishing village such as Caleta de Famara. Thus, the semi-elliptical facade of the peculiar building is in relief with an octopus, fish, crabs, shells, and jellyfish.
The small hotel in Caleta is a historical building of great importance for Lanzarote, not only because of its apparent physical appearance but also because of whoever owned it.
D. Luis Ramírez, an adopted son of Teguise, was a promoter of scholarships for students and used his heritage to conserve and manage art and culture on the island. As César Manrique said, "a scarce but very charitable animal."
Here I leave you a somewhat imaginative representation by looking at how little is left of the Hotelito.
Another vital element of the culture of Lanzarote is the Mill of Caleta de Famara, a construction of great historical and ethnographic value, dedicated to the extraction of water, currently in disuse and half buried by the sands of the beach. This mill is one of the elements of heritage interest included in the Master Plan for the Use and Management of the Chinijo Archipelago.
Both elements are now seriously damaged by the strict climate that governs the island of Lanzarote, and we hope that the administration will accept their respective restoration plans soon.
Caleta de Famara is a place you must visit if you come to Lanzarote, and it has it all. Rich local gastronomy, an incredible beach for surfing for all levels, impressive views of the cliff, numerous routes to investigate the caves on top of the cliff and a great historical value that we wanted to represent in this souvenir in magnet shape.
If you plan a route through Lanzarote full of culture and history, you cannot miss a visit to Famara.
